The festival is a celebration of the community and culture of Fort Nelson.

This year we are proud to celebrate the Fort Nelson First Nations and indigenous artists and culture from across Canada.

In 2020, the Northern Lights Festival, in partnership with Young Living Beauty School is presenting a five day Northern Lights Beauty School Package. The Community and Culture pass is included in registration for Beauty School.

This is what everyone is coming for... The Northern Lights are an amazing phenomenon that have inspired people from around the world. Viewing stations are located around the festival with shuttle transportation starting at 10pm each night. Feel the magic of the Northern Lights! Seeing is believing.

DJ Shub - March 19

Cultural Music Night! First Nations artists range from traditional dance and drum to the new and upcoming artists who blend the sounds of indigenous traditional music with new forms of dub step and electronica. Experience a whole new era as the journey of the First Peoples head into the new century.

Alex Wells - March 19

Championship Hoop Dancer, Alex Wells, brings an inspiring demonstration of the traditional Cree hoop dance. The hoop represents the never-ending circle of life. It has no end or beginning and reminds one that we, as nations, are all connected. Alex and his dancers will be performing multiple times throughout the festival.

Traditional Muskwa River Dancers

Muskwa River Dancers are indigenous people from the Northern Rockies region of all ages who learn traditional dance and will be performing during the Cultural Concert night.

Canadiana Music Night! Twenty years of vibrant and passionate performances by one of Canada's most unique guitar playing human spirit! Special guests will grace the stage for this incredible night of Canadiana - music that feeds to souls of rock, folk and country lovers!

Gord Bamford - March 21

Country Music Night! 26 time Canadian Country Music Award winning artist Gord Bamford is bringing his #RedNek Fest to Fort Nelson. An event you do not want to miss!

Ryan McMahon - March 20

Canadiana Music Night! Three time Vancouver Island Music Award winning artist, Ryan McMahon, returns to Fort Nelson in 2020 to bring his energetic and witty performance. Playing music from his latest release, "In Line for a Smile" and songs from his side project Lion Bear Fox. Be ready to sing along to "Freedom" and crowd favourite, "Shine".

Ceremonial Festival Fire

The Ceremonial Festival Fire! The Fort Nelson First Nations light the Northern Lights Festival ceremonial fire during Opening Ceremonies. The fire is located in the Fort Nelson First Nations Moose Camp where it is watched over twenty-four hours a day.

The only Canadian Young Living essential oil farm and distillery has its home here in Fort Nelson, BC. People from all over the world come privately to see how the oil is extracted. Seed to Seal is a process developed by the Young Living Essential Oil company. Here in Fort Nelson, the only Northern Lights Essential Oil extracted. The Northern Lights Black Spruce Farm and Distillery opens its doors throughout the festival to bring our guests on a tour of the process.


Fort Nelson is home to the Young Living Northern Lights Farm and Distillery where Gary Young purchased land in 2014. Since then, the harvest is one of the most celebrated experiences among oil enthusiasts... The black spruce oil has been called by many Native Americans ‘Black Spruce of the Northern Lights’ because during the aurora borealis, the branches touch the dancing colours in the sky, intertwining Mother Earth’s strength with the mysteries of the heavens... Arts, crafts, services and adventures are all within the doors of the Northern Lights Marketplace. Visit the Community Hall and be transformed into a winter wonderland where unique treasures can be found!

Do you want to build a snowman? Along with many other winter activities, like yoga and the Super Sliding Hill, sometimes it is good to just get out and build a snowman. Carrots provided!

Every morning the Northern Lights Festival starts the day right with a session of yoga provided by many of our local instructors.

Dog Sled Adventure

The heritage of dog sledding dates back to 2000 BC... and it has always been a part of transportation in Northern BC. During the Northern Lights Festival, local sled dog caretaker and kennel, Streeper Kennels, offers up an experience for you to meet the dogs and experience the beautifully silent ride that carried this region for centuries. Hot Springs Adventure

The Liard Hot Springs bring the Northern Lights and the winter wonderland together for an unforgettable evening. Bask in the warmth of the natural hot springs while gazing up at the open night sky filled with the aurora borealis. This experience can be added on to your festival pass or purchased in the Liard Hot Springs / Dog Sled Adventure Package.

Snowmobile Adventure

Brace yourself for the most fun in the snow and sun! A two hour training and tour on one of Northern BC's most exciting ways to travel - the snowmobile! Learn how to ride and then take a guided tour through the trails of Fort Nelson.
